There is a very common answer to this question.

It doesn't matter if you are totally sedentary and desk-bound doing no exercise.

It doesn't matter if you are fit, active, aware of your body, and exercising daily. 

It doesn't matter if you are young, old, woman, or man. The answer is always the same.  

Tight and stiff.  

If it's really bad, there might be an F-Bomb thrown into the answer as well :) In today's society, tightness and pain in the hips and hamstrings is an uber common problem. The body works on a very efficient "use it or lose it system".

You were born with amazingly diverse ranges of motion in your body. If your daily movement is not consistent and varied utilising the ability you were born with movements not used slowly get removed. Overtime your ability to move becomes more and more restricted. This will feel like tightness and stiffness in your body and even the most basic movements like bending over or crouching down will feel clunky and awkward. 

Lack of movement is one problem. The other is too much of one kind of movement.

  • Too much sitting
  • Too much running
  • Too much lifting weights
  • Too much of anything

Without movement variablity muscles either holding a certain static position (sitting) or muscles getting stronger in certain limited ranges while other muscles not used for the particular repeated movement become weaker leads to big problems. 

Throw in zero stretching and there you have it, pain in the hips & poor general mobility.

Having once had a tight and stiff body myself, I know what it’s like. Playing Rugby League and spending plenty of time in the gym when I was younger, with basically zero effective stretching, was a sure-fire way to leave not just my hips, but my entire body tight. I’ve also dealt with injury, having recovered from two ACL knee surgeries (not a pretty surgery, if you’re not familiar with it!). I did all the things that are well known to leave a body tight and with poor mobility.

When I stumbled across a good yoga deal, I figured I’d have nothing to lose if I gave it a go. 

I found the whole thing very difficult. I realised almost immediately that I wasn’t able to achieve some of the positions that should have been basic daily movements. I remember thinking to myself, “something isn’t right with my body. I should be able to do most of this”. Getting on top of some of the basics was one of my main motivations to persevere. The other?

I could feel it working.

If you think about this, it makes sense. For a moment, let’s call a yoga class a “stretch class”. I was coming from a place of no stretch. The extent of my stretching involved copying a stretch I once saw someone do, with no idea of what it was meant to achieve.  Going into a class at that level and stretching for 90 minutes, it’s no surprise that my tight body responded in an “OMG this is fantastic!” kind of way. When you start to loosen a tight body, it feels amazing. I kept at it, worked hard, continued to feel and see change not just in my body, but in my overall energy. I became a nicer, friendlier person, and have to thank yoga 100% for that.

I now teach yoga and movement for a living. I help people through the exact process that I went through and I believe that anybody can make the same changes I did with patience, focus and the right guidance.
